INSTRUCTOR TRAINING PROGRAM - SKI

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Instructor in Training Program interfaces directly with TSC instructors and program participants.  This is a “hands on” training program.  Duties include assisting classes on and off the hill, as well as with special events.   ITPs assist with the classes in the morning and then attend a 2 hour session in the afternoon from 12:15pm – 2:15pm with senior instructors on proper technique and teaching methodology.

We offer an Alpine Programs uniform, training session to familiarize participants with the rope tow and chair lift safety, and the program qualifies for 20 OSSD volunteer hours.

The program is designed to prepare participants for the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance Level 1 Course.  This is not a certification course; however, with strong attendance in the afternoon training sessions, ITPs are generally well equipped to attend the Level 1 course.   The CSIA level 1 age requirement is 14 years old at the time of the course.

Competitive Race Programs

U8 SOD COMPETITIVE PROGRAM

DESCRIPTION

The U8 competitive program represents the entry point for athletes of this age onto the ‘sport for life’ pathway.  The emphasis is on skier essentials, such as, focusing on the development of agility, balance, coordination, dexterity, endurance and flexibility.  The program will focus on the three dimensions of the sport, relative to the athletes ‘window of trainability.’  This is achieved through on snow activities and games.
50% of the time is supervised free skiing and the other 50% is skill development through on snow games.  All group training is completed with ACA-CSC/CSIA Certified Coaches.  While gate and environment training is not the main focus for this skiing group, athletes are exposed to skill environments and will have the opportunity to test their skills in the TSC house league races.

PREREQUISITES: U8 Competitive athletes must be able to follow verbal instruction, ski basic parallel and be comfortable skiing with poles.  Please note that if your child is unable to ski basic parallel with poles you will want to register in the U8 All Mountain Program.

U12 SOD COMPETITIVE PROGRAM

DESCRIPTION

The U12 competitive program focuses more on environment and gate training, while encouraging creative adaptation of fundamental skiing skills relative to the athlete’s strength and development. This is achieved through high volumes of directed free skiing and drills, high volumes of inconsistent terrain training, specific combined SL and GS environments relative to the disciplines of racing. This is also the appropriate age to introduce general nutritional concepts, mental preparation and tactical evaluation.

40% of the time is supervised free skiing, 20% is skill developing drills and
40% is environment training. In compliance with the ACA LTAD, the train to race ratio target for this group is 6 days of training to 1 competition. Athletes at this level should plan on additional days of unstructured skiing outside of TSC programming.

PREREQUISITES: U12 competitive athletes must be strong parallel skiers, demonstrate a comfort level with speed, be able to ski a variety of terrain and display a moderate level of independence.  Please check out our U12 All Mountain Program if your child is not interested in racing or needs more skill development.

U14 SOD COMPETITIVE PROGRAM

DESCRIPTION

The U14 competitive program focuses more on environment and gate training, while encouraging creative adaptation of fundamental skiing skills relative to the athlete’s strength and development. This is achieved through directed technical free skiing (TFS), skill targeted drills, continued time on inconsistent terrain, specific SL and GS environments and gate training.  This is also the appropriate age where basic speed and jumping skills are introduced through Super Giant Slalom (SG) and Skier Cross (SX). 30% is supervised TFS, 20% is skill developing drills and 50% is environment training. In compliance with the ACA LTAD, the train to race ratio target for this group is 6 days of training to 1 competition. Athletes at this level should plan on additional days of unstructured skiing outside of TSC programming.

PREREQUISITES: U14 competitive athletes must be strong parallel skiers and demonstrate a comfort level with speed and variety of terrain. They also must understand the basic rules of racing and display a medium level of independence.  Please check out our U14 All Mountain Program if you do not have any previous racing experience.

INSTRUCTOR TRAINING PROGRAM - SNOWBOARD

The program is designed to prepare participants for the Canadian Snowboard Association of Instructors Level 1 Course.  This is not a certification course; however, with strong attendance in the afternoon training sessions, ITPs are generally well equipped to attend the Level 1 course.   The CASI level 1 age requirement is 15 years old at the time of the course.

INTERCLUB PROGRAM

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Interclub is a masters ski racing league amongst clubs on the Niagara Escarpment.
While the fastest individual times of the day are recognized at each race, Interclub is all about the teams.  There have been as many as 10 teams in the league, but in recent years there have been six, some of which include racers from more than one club.  Current teams are:

  • Alpine Ski Club
  • Caledon Ski Club
  • Craigleith
  • Devils Glen, Toronto Ski Club & Milton Heights
  • Georgian Peaks
  • Jozo Weider

The Interclub season traditionally consists of four regular season races, plus one finals race, held through January and February.  The races rotate amongst the hosting clubs, with the regular season champion of the previous season hosting the finals.
Interclub has a long history of bringing together masters racers from clubs on and around the Escarpment for enthusiastic competition on winter Saturdays, in a unique blend of age group and team racing, followed by some socializing.
Interclub is organized by an informal committee of volunteer representatives from participating clubs.  They consult with Alpine Ontario, but races aren't sanctioned by Alpine Ontario.
